Toyota Updates Remaining Outstanding Takata Airbags to Critical

From 30 November 2020, Toyota Australia has reclassified all outstanding vehicles under the Takata Airbag Recall Campaign as critical.

Safety is Toyota's highest priority and the new classification means that all affected vehicle owners will receive a notification requesting they make a booking to have a Takata recall completed free of charge as a matter of urgency.

State and Territory registration authorities have also recently taken additional steps, which means that registration sanctions will apply to all outstanding vehicles under critical recall. If no action is taken, the continued registration of these outstanding vehicles will be at risk.

Toyota has been completing Takata recalls since 2013 and we are well progressed in our recall efforts. As at 30 November 2020, out of 589,044 vehicles (Toyota and Lexus) affected by the Takata recalls, we have replaced 537,269 (91.2%) Takata airbags. This recent reclassification of all Takata airbags to 'critical' has been made to further urge motorists with outstanding Takata airbags to have a replacement completed ahead of the upcoming end of the ACCC Mandatory Takata Recall Notice on 31 December 2020.

Affected vehicle owners are advised to stop driving their vehicle immediately as these vehicles are fitted with a faulty Takata airbag which could kill or seriously injure vehicle occupants. We encourage all affected vehicle owners to check the status of their vehicle on Toyota's VIN checker located at recalls.toyota.com.au or Lexus at www.lexus.com.au/recalls, make contact with their closest Toyota or Lexus Dealer immediately, or contact our Toyota Recall Campaign Helpline on 1800 987 366 or the Lexus Customer Assistance Centre on 1800 023 009.

Toyota Australia will continue with its Takata airbag recall efforts beyond the formal Recall Notice end date of 31 December 2020.

If you are still concerned about having your vehicle serviced you may wish to use our Contactless Service Option.  Simply follow the instructions:

  • Drop your keys off in our Early Bird Key Box located on the wall at Service
  • Pay over the phone when your car is completed
  • Pick up your keys and you're away
